Amityville, there was

Harrisville. The Conjuring tells the horrifying real story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, world popular paranormal private investigators, who were phoned call to help a family terrified by a dark existence in a secluded farmhouse. Required to face a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves captured in the most scary case of their lives. Oscar ® nominee Vera Farmiga (The Departed)and Golden Globe nominee Patrick Wilson(Insidious) play the private investigators while Golden Globe nominee Ron Livingston (Band of Brothers)and Emmy ® nominee Lili Taylor (Six Feet Under) play the Perron family afflicted by sinister spirits in this dark chiller from the writers of The Reaping and the developer of the Saw movies.]] > Director James Wan made a splash in the scary genre with Saw, a rather innovative midnight motion picture that generated a legion of splattery impersonators. Instead of continue in that overtly grody mode, nevertheless, Wan decided to carry on, with a series of movies(most significantly Dead Silence and Insidious) that showed a healthy gratitude of the classics in the field, as well as a pleasing development of abilities behind the cam. The Conjuring stands as the moment when Wan puts it all together, making a remarkably freaky haunted-house motion picture that respects its audience, even when it's hectic discovering new ways to introduce them from their seats. Based upon seemingly real events, the film works as something of a thesis on frightening motion pictures, including all the important elements-- a creaky door here, a frightening doll there, dark corners, well, everywhere-- as well as a command of old-school pacing. Unlike the majority of in-your-face contemporary scary, it understands when to hold back, and when to choose outright broke. Chad and Carey Hayes's script follows Lorraine and Ed Warren (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), a pair of married paranormal private investigators dealing with the increasing mental toll of their occupation. When they take on the case of a haunted Connecticut farmhouse, their misgivings come to a terrifying head. And then some. Wan gets some fantastic performances from his cast, particularly from the alternately steely and fragile Farmiga, and Lili Taylor, whose inspired work here more than compensates for her look in the misdirected remake of The Haunting. Together, they make it unnervingly simple to care about the important things in the shadows. The most remarkable aspect of The Conjuring, however, ultimately proves to be its utter relentlessness, gradually cranking the screws without turning to simple jump frightens to tone down the stress. While constantly playing reasonable, it certifies as one of those rare frightening motion pictures that put the viewer through the outright wringer, without leaving them feeling ill-used at the end. Prepare to jump.-- Andrew Wright
